Aim for Fame

Evan came in the door, dropped his jacket, sat in a chair, and put his head on the table.

"Mom, I am quitting basketball," he said.

Mrs. Shell stopped cutting up carrots. She put down her knife. "Why?" she asked. "I thought you liked to play basketball."

"I do," Evan mumbled. "Everyone else is better than I am, though. Marco is better at shooting. Dylan is better at passing. Jake is better at blocking. Kenn is better at rebounding. I'm not the best at anything!"

"Do you have to be the best to play?"

"Mom, you don't understand," Evan said. "If I am not the best, what is the use in playing? I might as well give up."

Evan's mother started chopping the carrots again. "I guess you are right," she said. "You might as well quit since you are not the best. But that's not what Michael Jordan did."

Evan sat up. "Mom, that's just silly. Michael Jordan is the best at everything in basketball! He is in the Basketball Hall of Fame. He never had a reason to quit!"
