I was beginning to think this was not worth it. We had already been on this ship for over two months.
I was riding on the Mayflower with my parents, sister, and brother. This was quite an adventure! An adventure that, at times, I could do without.
The Mayflower was not an attractive ship. Oh, it held all our supplies and people, but with just over 100 passengers, we were very crowded. It was difficult to find a quiet place to lie down at night. Several of us got seasick regularly, and even worse, some became ill with more serious diseases. The odor below decks was at times almost unbearable.
More than once, I wanted to say to my father, "Tell me again why we are doing this." My parents raised me to be careful about how I addressed those older than me. This did not always mean unquestioned obedience, though, or else we would not be on this ship at all. My father had allowed me to ask the question once. However, to ask again after being given a suitable explanation would have been considered disrespectful. So I kept my thoughts to myself. Deep down I knew they only came from weariness anyway.
Father had explained before we boarded the ship that it was time to seek a new land. He was tired of living under the control of England and its king.
