A Time Machine into the Past
The year is 1860. Simon is fifteen years old. His teacher just told him that he has graduated from school. She said that it was time for Simon to "spread his wings." Simon was not sure what that meant. He was unsure of what to do. Simon sees a farmer on the way home from school. After talking, Simon offers to get one thousand turkeys across the country for the farmer. During this time in history, the turkeys are transported by walking. Kathleen Karr was born on April 21, 1946, in Pennsylvania. She grew up on a chicken farm in New Jersey. Her family raised about five thousand chickens. Kathleen could not wait to leave farm life. She often escaped by reading and writing. She enjoyed reading books that took her to other places and times.
