A Slimy Visitor
Last night there was a visitor in my mom's garden. I know he was there because he left a trail of slime. He was very slimy! He also had two horns! Who was in my mom's garden? Was it a monster? No, it wasn't a monster. Was it a dragon? No, it wasn't a dragon. Was it all just a bad dream? No, my visitor was real. But don't worry, he was only a snail!
There are many kinds of snails in the world. Some live in the desert. Some live in gardens. Some even live in the ocean. All of these different snails come in different sizes. Some are small--only one millimeter. Others can be as big as thirty inches. The biggest land snail ever found was the Giant African Snail. He weighed two pounds!
Snails begin their lives as eggs. When they hatch, they have a very small shell and a very small body. Then they grow, and grow, and grow. Snails have at least one pair of antennae on their bodies. Some have two pair. These are known as horns, stalks, or tentacles. A snail's eyes are at the very tip of these stalks. When a snail needs to, he can pull these stalks into his body and protect himself.
