A Second Home

Thrift Shop Day

Reading Comprehension for August 17

"I would never get anything from THAT store," Dorothy said with disdain. "I always shop at the mall."

Dorothy and I lived in the suburb of a big city, and we were walking down its main street on a Saturday. We liked to walk down the sidewalk past the quaint shops and watch the people. It was always very interesting.

A few years ago, our main street did not have much to offer. Most people went to the large shopping mall just outside the city limits or shopped in the city. However, a few brave entrepreneurs decided that our town had possibilities, and they opened some unique shops. They scheduled some special events like concerts and art fairs, which brought more people to the main street. As more people came, more businesses opened. We had seen several added in just the last year, including a tea room, a coffee shop, an antique store, and an old-fashioned general store. The most recent addition was called A Second Home. It was a store run by a local charity.

A Second Home sold clothing and household goods that had been used by others and donated. Workers carefully washed, repainted, or repaired items, and the items were then sold for much less than the item would have cost brand new. Unbeknownst to Dorothy, I had shopped there with my mother several times, and the outfit I was now wearing was from there. I decided to have some fun with Dorothy.

"So, Dorothy," I began, "why wouldn't you shop at A Second Home?"

Dorothy looked at me as if my hair were green. "Their clothes are all used," she said.

"So?"

"So? Do YOU want to wear clothes someone else has cast off?"
