The Texas Rangers welcomed many men to their ranks. Some were hard workers who wanted nothing more than to uphold Ranger values. Some loved action and adventure, while a few hoped for glory.
Sam Walker was a man who loved adventure. He had a short life, just 32 years, but he packed it full of living.
Walker was born in Maryland in 1815, and it is thought he was educated fairly well. As a young man, he joined the army and helped fight Chief Osceola in the Florida swamps.
He acted with enough courage to have himself promoted in 1837 but left the army the next year. For a while he helped with the building of a new railway in Florida. He stayed with the job until 1841. Then he headed for Texas where fame awaited him.
