A New Land

On July 1, 1867, four provinces joined together to form a new country. This country was the Dominion of Canada. This was the result of much work. It did not happen overnight.


Governments often move slowly. It was that case in the Canadian colonies. Plans were made for Canada's self-rule more than 100 years before they happened.


Splitting Quebec into Upper and Lower Canada in 1791 was one step. Reuniting the two provinces again in 1840, was another.


John A. Macdonald was elected the co-Premier of the new Province of Canada. He had a vision for what the people could do. He saw New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland as the perfect partners with his own province.


He invited the leaders of the other provinces to join him in talks about a possible union. The smaller Maritime provinces were skeptical at first.
