A New Friend
"Who would like to write a letter to someone new?" Ms. Abby asked. Ms. Abby was the fourth grade teacher at Reach Elementary School. She had a surprise for her students.
"Like a teacher or something?" Eric asked. Eric didn't like to write at all.
"No, not a teacher," Ms. Abby said. "You will be writing to someone your own age."
"Oh, you mean like another fourth grader," Dana said. "Someone we don't even know." Dana liked to write, but had a hard time getting to know new people.
"Yes, Dana, it will be someone you don't know now. I hope you will get to know each other by writing letters."
"Well, that sounds okay," Kayla said. "I will just send an e-mail, though." Kayla loved computers. She did all of her work on computer.
"You may use the computer for writing the letters, but you must print them and take them to the post office for mailing," Ms. Abby said. "The students to whom you will be writing do not have computers."
"What do you mean by that?" Amber said. "Everyone has a computer!"
"No, Amber, many people don't have computers," Ms. Abby said. "We are very lucky to have computers, but many children do not have them. You will be writing to students in countries where very few people have them."
"Where? Where? Where?" the children asked.
Ms. Abby smiled. "Each of you will be writing to a student in a different country. Are you ready to find out who your new friends are?" she asked.
