A Loud Little Frog
In many places across North America, the first sign of spring is the call of spring peepers. Spring peepers are small tree frogs. Their bodies are only about an inch across, but many of them together can make a very BIG noise! They live in meadows and woods that are close to ponds, marshes, or swamps. In the fall, these small frogs hide under logs, leaves, or soil. Their blood has a special chemical in it that keeps it from freezing. Peepers can survive many weeks of cold winter while their bodies are almost completely frozen. Although these frogs live on land, they must lay their eggs in water. When spring comes, these little frogs are very happy! They hop out of their hiding places and head to water, looking for mates. The male spring peepers are the ones making all that racket.
