Amanda's teacher was unusually excited about the field trip today. She loved taking her students on field trips, and on this cool November day, she had planned one that she thought they would like. She wore a pink wool coat, hoping that one of her fashion-conscious students might notice its pretty pearl buttons.
The yellow bus pulled into the parking lot of the museum, and the students shivered as they stepped out into the brisk wind. The group walked around to the front of the museum through swirls of brown leaves on the sidewalk. They climbed the large gray steps, and at the top, Ms. Blanc stopped and raised her hand to make an announcement. The group stood and listened to their enthusiastic teacher. Some of them jumped up and down once or twice to get warm.
"I know I have kept my lips buttoned about this field trip," said Ms. Blanc with a smile. "Now you will understand why I also wore a coat with these large buttons. You are going to see lots and lots of buttons at the museum today because it is National Button Day!"
The students smiled weakly at their teacher's rather lame joke. Why did teachers always tell silly jokes? They fidgeted like a flock of chickens waiting to be fed. They just wanted to get out of the cold wind and into the warm halls of the museum!
"I think you will enjoy the exhibit today. Your assignment is to pick out one button and write a fiction story about it when we get back to class," said Ms. Blanc.
