A Brief History of the Pledge of Allegiance

The Pledge of Allegiance is an oath of loyalty to the United States. It is recited at many public functions. Children learn the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools at an early age.

The original Pledge of Allegiance was written by a Baptist minister named Francis Bellamy in 1892. The pledge was published in September 8th issue of a magazine called The Youth's Companion. Bellamy wanted to make the pledge quick and to the point. The Pledge was printed on leaflets and sent to public schools throughout the United States.

Bellamy was in charge of preparing a program for the entire nation's public schools that year. It was a celebration of the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus Day. The focus of the ceremony was a flag raising with a flag salute. He included his "Pledge of Allegiance" along with the flag salute.

Bellamy's original pledge reads as follows:
