A Breakdown to Talk

Father/Daughter Take a Walk Together Day

Reading Comprehension for July 7

Leina smoothed her skirt as she sat on the front seat of the car. She pulled her long black braid over the front of her shoulder to keep it neat. She looked at the clock in the dashboard. Then she willed the car to move more quickly.

Mr. Singh glanced over at his daughter.

"What is wrong, Leina?" he asked. "We are not running late. We should have plenty of time to make it to the father-daughter banquet."

"I know. I guess I am just looking forward to the banquet. This is the first time you have been able to attend."

Mr. Singh nodded. "I am sorry that my work is keeping me from home so much. I miss being able to talk with you."

Leina nodded. There were many things she wanted to say, but she did not know where to start. There wouldn't really be time to talk at the banquet, either. There would be too many people around.

She had just formed the words of a question when the car's engine made a funny noise. She held her breath. There it was again. Mr. Singh had no sooner pulled the car to the shoulder of the road when the engine quit completely. They coasted to a stop.

"What's wrong, Dad?" she asked.
