Why Does the Order of Operations Matter?
When a math problem involves more than one operation, it is important for students to understand the way the expression is intended to be read. This is why mathematics has established conventions, or agreed-upon rules, for interpreting mathematical expressions. The purpose of the order of operations is to avoid potential ambiguities. For example, without the order of operations, it would be possible to interpret 3 + 5 x 10 - 2 in multiple ways. Since you can only have one correct solution to a mathematical expression, the order of operations must be applied. In this case, 3 + 5 x 10 - 2 becomes 3 + 50 - 2 and then 53 - 2. The solution is 51.
Understanding the correct order of operations is a fundamental skill that students must master in order to tackle more complex mathematical expressions later on. EdHelper's worksheets provide plenty of practice to help students learn and internalize this rule, and they set them up for future math success!

What is the Order of Operations?
The order of operations refers to the rules that determine the sequence of calculations in an expression with more than one type of operation. The correct order of operations is first to do all operations inside parentheses, then exponents. From there, do all multiplication and division, working from left to right. Then, do all addition and subtraction, also from left to right.
There is a common misconception that multiplication comes before division, and addition before subtraction, but in both cases, neither one takes priority. You do all multiplication and division (from left to right), followed by all addition and subtraction. The confusion comes from learning the mnemonic phrase, "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally," because it implies that multiplication comes before division, and addition before subtraction. But actually, multiplication and division are ranked the same, as are addition and subtraction. When there is a consecutive string of division and multiplication, they are performed from left to right. The same rule applies to addition and subtraction.
