Kindergarten Morning Work

In terms of reading and writing skills, by the end of Kindergarten, children are expected to be able to read and print most upper and lower-case letters, know their short and long vowel sounds, read dozens of three letter, often rhyming, words, and correctly write many vowel/consonant/vowel words. They should know the three kinds of writing (opinion, explanatory, and storytelling) and be able to write (or draw) a couple of sentences of each. In terms of Language Arts, by the end of Kindergarten children are expected to be able to print many upper- and lowercase letters, use frequently occurring nouns and verbs, form regular plural nouns orally by adding /s/ or /es/, understand and use question words (interrogatives) (e.g., who, what, where, when, why, how), use the most frequently occurring prepositions, capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I, and recognize and name end punctuation. In terms of math, by the end of Kindergarten, students should be able to count to 100 by 1s and by 10s, write numbers 0 to 20, and compare two numbers between 1 and 10. They should be able to figure out the number to add to any number from 1 to 9 to make 10 using objects, fingers, or drawings, and they should be able to use names of shapes to describe objects in the environment.
