Ralphie calls Maggie an "ogress" like his mother. After a while he decides that she isn't as much of an ogress and calls her an "ogrette." Make a list of these name relationships. For example, fawn and doe, whisker and hair, cub and lion, etc.
Make a character web to illustrate Mad Mary's character traits.
What clues from the story help you to determine Mad Mary's characteristics?
Ralphie called Maggie an ogress which made her furious with him. Ralphie decided enough was enough and Maggie should stop taking him for granted. What does the phrase "enough is enough" mean?
As Mud approached Mary's bag that lay out in the woods, he was familiar with a scent but also distrusted it. Why was the scent familiar to, and what about it did he distrust? (Hint: First think about the bag itself and then the items inside.)
What clues from the story give you the impression that Mud is a very smart and sensitive dog?
What do you think Ralphie means when he tells Maggie that she is "using him"?
