In Chapter 1, Helen Keller wrote that "there is no king who has not had a slave among his ancestors, and no slave who has not had a king among his." What does this quote mean. Why do you think she included this philosophy in her autobiography?
As a result of Helen Keller's childhood illness, she becomes deaf, mute, and blind. Give some examples from her childhood of how she would communicate with those around her.
Explain why Helen Keller would have fits of anger and physical outbursts? Where were some of the places that her parents turned to for help?
Helen Keller makes several references to light and gives the metaphor of her being a lost ship in the fog without compass or sounding-line. She also stated that "knowledge is love and light and wisdom." Put yourself in her place and describe how you would feel under the circumstances. Then explain how she felt by the arrival of Anne Sullivan.
Summarize what happened to Helen Keller in the cherry tree and then in the mimosa tree. What does her experience in the mimosa tree reveal about her character?
Explain the challenge a deaf and blind person has in learning versus that of a hearing and speaking child.
