Near the end of the first chapter, Hawthorne describes the prison door with iron spikes, a cemetery, and an ugly plot of weeded land. He then goes on to describe a single "wild rose-bush" and says that it "may serve...to symbolize some sweet moral blossom, that may...relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow." What does Hawthorne mean when he describes the rose-bush as symbolizing something?
Imagery is used throughout the novel. Hawthorne uses his special skills in vivid descriptions or narrative effects. Quote one use of imagery in each of the first four chapters.
A metaphor is an implied, not stated, comparison. The prison is described as "the black flower of civilized society." How is this statement a metaphor?
Describe the people of Boston in 1650.
