In this section of the story, Esperanza introduces her readers to many different characters. Which character is your favorite? Tell us why. Describe the character and tell us why this particular character is your favorite.
Esperanza visited a palm reader even though it seemed that she didn't really want her palm read. Why do you think she might have visited with her? What do you think she might have been hoping to hear?
What does Esperanza mean when she says, "His name was Geraldo? And his home is in another country. The ones he left behind are far away, will wonder, shrug, and remember. Geraldo-he went north...we never heard from him again".
What was your impression of Ruthie? Use details from the story to support your answer.
Why do you think Esperanza feels that the four skinny trees are the only ones that understand her?
Mamacita refuses to learn English and cries for her pink house she left behind. Esperanza says "I would", meaning that she would cry, too. What do you think she meant by that?
Can you identify with any of the characters, or do you know anyone who reminds you of one of the characters that Esperanza introduced to us in this section? Tell us why you can identify with or why this person reminds you of the character.
