In Chapter 14 Simon collected Lizzie's things from her dugout and packed them in the wagon. He mentioned that he'd "brought out something else too, but stowed it in the wagon, amongst the corn till she could face it better." Predict what you think that item was and explain why Simon would not want Lizzie to see it right away.
Life is full of surprises, as was the turkey walk from Union, Missouri, to the prairie near the Smoky Hill Fork. List five surprises encountered since the walk began.
Imagine a newspaper reporter from Denver happened upon the Hardwick's sod house just in time to witness Simon's turkeys gobbling down the mass of juicy, invading grasshoppers! Write the headline and story that would appear in the next morning's newspaper.
Jabeth was very firm when he announced, "Everybody here's got to have a talent. Got to contribute to Simon's enterprise." Simon protested Jabeth's request, arguing that Lizzie needed time to "ac-climate." Do you agree with Jabeth or Simon? Support your choice with reasons.
After learning that a soldier shot one of Simon's turkeys for target practice, Sergeant Johnson directed Simon to write a request for repayment for "any valuables lost in this unauthorized skirmish." Simon was to send his plea to the Superintendent of the Army in Washington City. Write the letter that Simon may have written.
