In chapter 7, Nick says that during the luncheon with his friends, they "drank down nervous gayety with the cold ale." What were the individuals so nervous about? Do you think Tom was justified in seeming jealous? Explain.

Explain what Nick means in chapter 8 when he says "Jay Gatsby had been broken up like glass against Tom's hard malice."
In chapter 8, the narrator informs us that Gatsby gave Daisy a sense of security and the feeling that he was able to take care of her. In your opinion, what is more important, being able to take care of someone emotionally or financially?
List the series of events that takes place after Myrtle Wilson is hit by a car.
Why is there such a lack of interest by Gatsby's associates regarding his death? What does this say about his character? What does this say about the characters of others?
Explain how Gatsby's parties were like his funeral.
Is the narrator cynical despite the fact that he claims to be non-judgmental? Reread the first few pages and look for clues as to his true identity. Why was it that the narrator despised Gatsby but was the only one who seemed to truly care about him?
