In literature, symbolism is when an author or reader can attribute symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships. Tom goes back to silently observe Aunt Polly's grief during the nighttime. Give support to the statement, "In Chapter 15, nighttime is symbolic of death and darkness."
Twain uses very powerful imagery and description to describe the storm that swept over Jackson's Island. Create a list of words and phrases that were used to describe the storm.
What did Tom's great secret turn out to be? In your opinion, what was the reason behind this secret?
Summarize the jealousy game that Tom and Becky played with each other on Tom's return to school.
Satire is a type of writing that is full of irony, sarcasm, or caustic wit used to attack or expose folly, vice, or stupidity. Chapter 21 is full of satire regarding Twain's feelings about Examination Day, the schoolmaster, and the fancy, but empty, writings of the female students. In your own words, deconstruct some of the satire that Twain displays and explain the truths he is attempting to point out. Give specific examples from the chapter.
