Using Joe Harper and Becky Thatcher in your answer, make an argument as to how Tom can be a thoughtful person and friend.
In Chapter 8, Tom runs into the woods to avoid Becky Thatcher and to reflect upon his feelings about her. However, as Twain writes, "The elastic heart of youth cannot be kept compressed into one constrained shape long at a time." Explain the meaning of this quote and what it has to do with the rest of the chapter.
Make a prediction as to how the murder of Dr. Robinson will affect the plot of the story.
Explain how Tom proved his point to Aunt Polly regarding the various treatments and medicines that she would give to him in hopes he would become more lively.
In Chapter 13, Tom decides to run-away and he bumps into Joe Harper. The author describes the boys as "two souls with but a single thought." Explain what the author means by this quote and describe what had driven the boys to the point of running away.
Irony is defined as the "incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs." Explain the irony when Tom Sawyer, the Black Avenger of the Spanish Main, wrestles with his conscience on Jackson's Island.
At the end of Chapter 14, what do you think Tom wrote on the sycamore bark and where do you think he ran off to?
