Consider Elie's stay in the camp's hospital. Describe the treatment he received from the doctor and hospital workers. Compare his conditions in the hospital with those of the blocks. What was your perception of the doctor?
As the Russian front neared Camp Buna, Elie and his father had a difficult decision to make. The choices were to remain behind, where his father could be admitted as a hospital patient, or follow the other prisoners and evacuate. Had you been in their situation of not knowing the fate of the hospital, what choice would you have made, and why?
The author does not say what caused Elie's right foot to become infected. List possible causes for the diseased foot.
Explain the irony in the head of the block's order to have prisoners wash the wooden floor of the block, an hour before evacuation. Consider his quote on the last page of chapter 5, when he answered to the prisoners who questioned his command.
On New Year's Day thousands of prisoners, heads of the blocks, and even Kapos gathered together to pray. During the service, Elie questions his faith in God, for He had allowed His people to suffer so much. Think of other situations in history and life in which people may have had strong reason to question their faith.
