At the end of the chapter, Nicodemus says that "those injections were to change our whole lives." What do you think the injections were and how do you think they changed the rats' lives?
When Nicodemus is talking about his experience in the maze, he says, "Why would I bother to run through it at all, if I knew it was only a trick? The answer is I couldn't help it. When you've lived in a cage, you can't bear not to run, even if what you're running toward is an illusion." Explain what Nicodemus meant by this. How would you feel if your freedom was taken away?
Explain what the injections were doing to the rats in group A.
Explain why Justin did not want Nicodemus to explore the laboratory with him.
When Justin and Nicodemus explored the air ducts, they did not have any light so they brought a spool of string instead. Why?
What were Jenner's concerns regarding what the rats would do once they escaped?
Why was Dr. Schultz's "caution his undoing"?
Nicodemus mentioned that he kept notes on all of the things that the rats and mice experienced over the next two years. Write the page of notes that explains how Nicodemus lost his eye and got the scar on his face. Be creative.
Give some examples from the chapter as to how the rats' ability to read helped them out.
Look back at the schedule Mrs. Frisby encountered in "Isabella." How does that information relate to what she saw in the Main Hall and what could it mean?
Why do you think that the rats want to live without stealing?
