Max said it was like Worm had a switch inside, and she could turn herself off somehow. When did Worm act this way? Why do you think this happened?
Max didn't believe the sheriff when he said that no one would get arrested. Max thought, "...in real life stuff never has a happy ending like it does on TV. I learned that a long time ago and my brain won't let me forget it." What experiences taught Max this philosophy? What is your philosophy about real life and happy endings?
Describe how the prayer at the edge of the mine shaft changed Worm. Explain why it was so important to her.
Although Dip and Grim didn't know what happened at Worm's house, they did believe that Max didn't do anything wrong. Hearing this helped Max realize that "if you stick to the truth you'll be okay, even if the rest of the world thinks you're a liar." Discuss a time when you stuck to the truth, even when others didn't believe you.
When Max and Worm arrived at Chivalry, it was a scary, uninhabited mining town. Discuss a time when you went to a frightening place, such as a haunted house, or even when you were alone in your house at night. Explain how it made you feel, and discuss whether or not you would put yourself in that situation again. If this has never happened to you, explain how you think you would feel in such a situation.
Discuss some of the problems Max and Worm faced as they walked carefully through the mining tunnel. Elaborate on some of the concerns that worried Max.
