One of the themes of this section of the novel deals with hope vs. despair. What are some examples of Stanley being hopeful, and what are some examples of him being filled with doubt? How do you think his hopefulness helped him?
What do you think is so special about the onions that Zero and Stanley ate? Compare the boys' situation to the Tennyson's situation.
Describe how Zero and Stanley helped each other out during this section of the novel. Give examples from the book.
In Chapter 36, Zero says, "When you spend your whole life living in a hole, the only way you can go is up." What does he mean by this? How is this a metaphor of the "hole" that the boys were in? How were they trying to dig themselves out of this hole?
