The children usually divide adults into four categories: people who weren't good with children, people who thought they were children, people who treated children like adults, and people who could get along with children as they were. Think of adults in your life and try to put them into one of the four categories.
All of the children except Jane enjoyed the dinner and were excited about Mr. Smith. Hypothesize why Jane wasn't happy about Mr. Smith being in their lives.
The children were so excited to be riding in a car because not many people owned cars at that time. Describe something that would excite you as much if someone you knew had one and let you experience it.
Jane shocked the other children when she wished to belong to another family. Jane didn't really get what she wished for. Describe your ideal family.
Jane seemed like a new person after coming back to her family. Describe how Jane was different after the other family incident.
Smith took the family on a picnic dinner, and it was wonderful. List all the things that made it a great picnic.
Martha thought she heard her mother crying the night after the picnic. Hypothesize why their mother would be crying after having such a good time with Mr. Smith on the picnic.
