Franklin is afraid of everything. Keep a list of all the things that Franklin is afraid of and why he is afraid of them.
Franklin was speechless when he saw the mannequin wearing the hockey uniform. Explain why he couldn't speak.
The painter called Sarah a "little angel" when he saw her pretending to ice skate. Compare the Sarah pretending to ice skate to the Sarah in the beginning of the book.
Franklin said that "girls don't play baseball in Pelican View." Explain what he meant by that.
Martin Howerton was upset that Sarah was getting to bat cleanup. Explain why the cleanup position was so important to the baseball team.
Sarah froze the first time she went up to bat even though she was the best batter on the team. Describe how she felt when she struck out.
Franklin made it to first base on a walk, but the first baseman wouldn't let him tag up. Explain why Sarah followed Franklin to first base and stuck up for him and the coach didn't.
On the way home, Julie tried to lecture Sarah about her behavior, but Sarah told her that if Julie had stuck up for Franklin, Sarah wouldn't have had to. Describe how all three of them were feeling on the way home.
There was a package on the front steps of Franklin's house when they got home from the baseball game, but it was addressed to Sarah. Predict what is in the package.
Sarah is going to get extra help in reading now that her father went to the school and signed the papers. Describe why her father went and signed the papers now when he wouldn't do it in the past.
Franklin seems to be changing, too. Describe why Franklin is starting to think that all his worrying is holding him back and there might be other things that he should be concerned about.
Julie thought that you couldn't think of skating like walking and told Sarah to try pushing off on her skates. Compare/contrast the way a body moves when it is walking to the way a body moves when it is skating.
Franklin's idol, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Explain what he meant by that.
Julie borrowed some old hockey equipment from a friend to try to talk Franklin into getting on the ice. Explain why Franklin would or would not like to put on the used hockey equipment.
Both Franklin and Sarah are different people at the end of the story. Compare/contrast Franklin and Sarah to the people they were in the beginning and end of the book.
