Andrew's Treasure Hunt

The hot sun was almost overhead when Andrew and his family finally got to the beach. They had been driving all morning so they could reach the coast. Andrew and his sister Marcie were ready to run and play in the sand.

"Before you go any farther, let's have some lunch," mother said. "We have sandwiches on wheat bread as well as some potato salad."

Andrew and Marcie each made a face, but mother didn't see it. As they ate, they watched the flight of the gulls nearby and the dolphins playing in the water. Sometime later, after they had all eaten, Andrew went to get his new birthday gift out of the car. He had received a metal detector and could hardly wait to try it out. The sun was warm on his back, and the sand was soft under his toes. Nothing felt better than this, he thought.

"Andrew," said father, "the salesman told us this was the best brand of metal detector they sold. Have you taken time to read the instructions yet?"
