Arthur's Dreams
By Mary L. Bushong

1     Arthur was a black and white kitten. He wasn't just any kitten, though. He dreamed of doing great things in the world when he grew up. He loved to sit on his cat perch and stare out the large living room window. As he stared, he dreamed.

2     One day, he dreamed of being the only cat who could herd sheep. He would bite at their heels to make them go faster. He would chase them wherever the shepherd wanted them to go. Everyone would be amazed at the things he could do. Arthur thought it would be great fun â€" until he imagined running through a mud puddle and getting his white socks dirty. That would not be nice. He gave his paws a quick wash to make himself feel better.

3     On another day, Arthur began to wish he were the captain of a fishing boat. He would find just the right ship. It would have large nets to catch many fish. It made Arthur's mouth water just thinking about it. He would hold the wheel of the boat and send it to the fishing grounds. He would wear big boots to keep his white socks clean and dry. He could almost see the silvery fish falling from the nets onto the deck of the ship. When it was time for lunch, he would shout for the cook to bring his meal. There would be so much fish that each crew member's dish would be filled to the very top. They would not be able to finish it all.
