Angola - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Do you know what a ghost town is? It sounds like it might be a town full of ghosts. As strange as that sounds, it's partly correct. Ghost towns are empty towns. A town becomes a ghost town when everyone who lives there leaves. Many ghost towns are small. But there's a city in Africa where hundreds of thousands of people lived that almost became a ghost town.

2     This city is Luanda. It is located in the country of Angola. Angola is a country on the west coast of Africa. Luanda is on Angola's Atlantic Ocean coast. It is Angola's capital city. Today, more than four million people live in Luanda. Most of the people who live there are native Angolans. A native is someone who was born and raised in a certain place. Are you a native of your country?

3     Not so long ago, Angolans didn't rule their own country. Europeans from Portugal ruled Angola. The Portuguese ruled for many hundreds of years. They were terrible to the natives. They sold many native Angolans into slavery.
