Georgia - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Southeastern Europe has a country that has been a kind of center for many different cultures. This country has been home to many different kinds of people for several thousand years. It has been strategically important to dozens of different empires and countries, and its geographic position put it at the center of European and Asian trade. This country is Georgia.

2     Georgia is located in an interesting part of the world. Both geographically and culturally, it is at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The Greek Empire was interested in this area and colonized it in the 8th century BC. The Greeks lost the area to Anatolian tribes from nearby Turkey about a hundred years later.

3     For the next several hundred years, rule of the area changed hands a lot. The Persian Achaemenians, the Selucids, the Macedonians, and Romans all ruled the area at one time or another. If you guessed this was confusing for the locals, you guessed right. Then the Romans took over in 189 BC. They set up local governments that exercised some self-rule. But the real "golden age" of Georgia's history happened under Arab rule around the 12th century.
