1 Winter! Some people hate it, but for others, it's a great time of year. In Cornwall, it means the reopening of the Big Ben Ski Center. The Ski Center came about in a very unusual way.
2 Garbage! Everybody has it, and sometimes no one can figure out how to get rid of it. During the 1970's, a pulp and paper company named DOMTAR had that very problem. The pulp mill created tons of a dirt-like sludge each day, and no one knew what to do with it. The waste material was rich in nutrients and could be used as fertilizer, but how much fertilizer could local farmers use?
3 One day, an engineer had an idea. There was a lot of empty, flat land behind a nearby shopping center. Why not use that land and the waste material to build something that could be useful for the people of Cornwall? He approached his bosses, and they approached the city council. Working together, a wonderful idea became a reality. DOMTAR would take its non-hazardous waste material from the pulp plant and build a ski hill.
