1 Did you know that the clock radio that wakes you up in the morning once saved the symbol of France throughout the world? The Eiffel Tower is the favorite monument of tourists and the French who call it the "Iron Lady." However, this has not always been so.
2 The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel for the World's Fair to demonstrate the technical superiority of France at that time. The iron structure and design of the tower didn't please everyone, and many people, especially artists, thought that the iron structure was ugly. They wanted to get rid of it, and they put pressure on the government to have it taken down.
