A Horse in the Bed Room - The Legend of Tempe Wick

The winter of 1781 had been a particularly hard one, and the Continental soldiers were either starving or freezing to death in their tents. They would ask for food at the surrounding farms but would also take it without paying if no one was around. After all, they were fighting for the independence of all of the people.

Young Tempe (Temperance) Wick lived on a large and prosperous farm in the area of the encampment. She had always loved horses and was a very good rider.

Her mother had been ill, and Tempe was sent to the home of her brother-in-law, Dr. Leddell, to fetch some medicine for her.

As she was riding home, a group of soldiers stopped her on the road and took hold of her horse's bridle.
