Figure Skating
By Jane Runyon

1     Ice has always been a challenge for humans. Moving from one spot to another across a slick surface can be very difficult. Thousands of years ago, humans tried to find a way to meet the challenge. Historians believe humans found a unique way of crossing ice covered rivers.

2     The Dutch word for skate is schenkel. This word means leg bone. The first skates were made from bones. Early men tied the rib bones of elk or deer antlers to their feet with leather straps. They found they were able to glide across the ice. They used the slick surface to give them speed.

3     Skates began to change. In the 1300s, skates were made of wood. Not long after that, metal skates were introduced. The Dutch used skates for transportation. Holland had many canals which froze solid during the long winters. The Dutch would use their skates to go from village to village. Soon, people began using skates for fun and recreation.
