"Bin" Composting?
By Beth A. Beutler

1     Grandma Susie has a compost bin. She throws all sorts of scraps in it. The chickens think it is for them. They like to peck at it!

2     I asked Grandma what a compost bin is. She said it makes soil to help her plants and garden grow. At first, I did not understand.

3     Grandma Susie explained. "Over time, my leftover vegetables, pieces of plants, grass clippings, and egg shells break down into something called humus. Humus contains nutrients that plants need to help them grow. I mix the finished humus into my plants and garden. It's a way to recycle my food scraps and garden wastes."
