Earth Movers - Gravity
By Patti Hutchison

1     The land around us is constantly changing. These changes may take thousands of years, or they may happen in an instant. One force that can change the landscape is gravity.

2     Weathering breaks up rocks into smaller pieces. Very little of the earth is completely flat. Pieces of rock and soil that are on a slope can be easily moved by gravity. This is called mass movement. There are several factors that can cause mass movement of earth.

3     Weight is a measure of the pull of gravity on an object. The more a rock weighs, the more likely it is to be pulled downhill. If the surfaces of the land and the rock are smooth, there will be little friction. This will also cause the rock to move easily down the hill.
