Adaptation
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Think of where you live. Is it usually warm or cold? Does it ever get very hot? Do you have a lot of snow? Is there a mountain, a desert, an ocean, or maybe a swamp nearby? What kinds of plants grow where you live? Do they look like plants in other parts of the world? If they don't, do you know why?

2     You probably know that plants need several things to grow. These things are sunshine, warmth, water, and soil. Are all of these things the same everywhere? It is hard for plants to grow in a desert because there is not enough water. It is also hard for plants to grow on rocks, because there is no soil. Plants need soil to put down their roots and grow. It is also very hard for plants to grow where it is too cold - near the North and South Poles, for example.

3     You can certainly tell that there are different climates on our planet. All of them have different amounts of sunshine, water, warmth, and soil. That is why plants do not look the same in different places. They have to change the way they grow to survive. That change is called "adaptation." It does not happen quickly. It takes plants many years to adapt to fit a different climate.
