1 Jackie was very excited. Her friend Jenny was going away during school break. She needed someone to take care of her dog. Jackie did not have a dog of her own, and her parents had decided to let Jenny's dog stay with them for a week.
2 "I can hardly wait until Princess gets here," Jackie told Jake as they hung out on Jackie's front porch.
3 "You've never had a dog, have you?" Jake asked.
4 "No. I'm hoping after Princess is here, Mom and Dad will let me have one."
5 Jake smiled. Maybe they would; maybe they wouldn't. Jackie's family was pretty busy, and Jake knew that pets took a lot of time and effort. Jake used to have a cat and a dog, but they had both gotten very old and died in the same year when Jake was ten. His parents decided not to get any more pets for a while after that.
6 Two days later, Jackie's friend dropped off Princess, a small white terrier, while Jake was visiting. She also brought a whole box of items. "What's all that stuff?" Jackie asked.
7 Jenny explained. "I have Princess's special food, some dog treats, her favorite toy, her bed, and her leash."
8 "Okay," Jackie replied.
