What Is Workers' Compensation?
By Patti Hutchison

1     Ann slipped in a puddle of water that someone had left on the floor at work. She fell and broke her arm. She went right to the emergency room. The doctor took care of Ann's arm and said she would be as good as new in about six weeks.

2     "Six weeks!" Ann exclaimed. "I can't be off work for six weeks. How will I pay my bills?"

3     The doctor looked at Ann's chart. "It says here that you were hurt at work," he said.

4     "Yes, that's true," Ann told him.

5     "You need to file a claim with workers' compensation," the doctor told her. "That will help you pay your bills while you are off work."
