Snifflesnort
By Brenda B. Covert

Snifflesnort was a parrot-faced dinosaur. His real name was Snarfeck. He did not like his nickname. He did not like a lot of things. He darted past some rocks and hid under a toadstool. He was going to pout, and he wanted to be alone.

He thought of the Brontosaurus, the thunder lizard that had lived long ago. He had been so big that he could have had anything he wanted. Nobody dared to laugh at him or tell him to take a nap. Or call him a name like "Snifflesnort."

His lower lip pooched out so far that he barely saw the bug crawling up the stem of the toadstool. Suddenly the sniffles stopped. Snifflesnort sucked his lip back in. He tripped over his tail as he backed away, eyes as wide as dinosaur eggs.

"It's a bug!" he cried. "It's huge! It's going to get me! Help!"

The bug stood still as if surprised at all the fuss.

Mother lumbered through the trees to find her baby.

"What are you crying about now? Are you hurt?"

"No, it's a giant bug!" Snifflesnort pointed at the toadstool. "It's got claws!"

Mother looked at the toadstool. "I don't see anything. And anyway, bugs don't have claws. You must be imagining it."
