¹     "We have to walk to school?" Walter exclaimed, standing outside in the warm sunshine. "But that's way too far! I can't do that!"
 
²     Walter's older brother, Chad, laughed. "We are such wimps these days," he said.
 
³     "What do you mean?" asked Walter.
 
⁴     "I've been learning in history class what it was like to live in the past. Do you know that two thousand years ago people walked many miles a day?"
 
⁵     "That's because they did not have cars," Walter said with a smirk.
 
⁶     "True, but people who lived long ago were willing to work harder."
 
⁷     "I work hard!" Walter retorted, adjusting his new school backpack.
 
⁸     "Yeah, right," Chad answered. "You don't even want to walk a mile to school with me."
 
⁹     "But I get tired," Walter moaned.
 
¹⁰     "Walter, I thought you wanted to join the soccer team."
